Medieval fortifications: how to design a model castle

A model castle is more than a collection of towers, walls, and miniature banners. It is a compact study of medieval military architecture, showing how terrain, materials, technology, and social organization shaped the places people defended and inhabited. Before cutting cardboard or mixing plaster, decide what kind of stronghold you are representing. Begin with the site and historical setting

Sketch the site before designing individual buildings. Mark the highest point, the likely road, nearby water, and areas where an attacker could gather. Build the castle in logical stages

Next, assemble the main defensive structures. Test-fit towers and walls before gluing them permanently.
